Due to a history of violence and a compromised capacity for law and order, issues of commercial sexual exploitation, rape and gender inequality run rampant in Cambodia.  ‘Bauk’ (premeditated gang rape) is on the rise and recent studies show that 1 in 5 Cambodian men aged 18-49 have admitted to sexual abuse.

The Jogini tradition has been part of southern Indian life for many centuries.  It is recognised as a form of modern day slavery whereby girls as young as 4 years-old are dedicated in marriage to a local deity and must then prostitute themselves to men as an act of worship.

Until recently, the closest primary school available to students in a remote Indonesian village was 5km away across steep and treacherous terrain. Each week the children would make the journey and sleep in makeshift huts every night before returning back to their home village for the weekend. This was a difficult situation for the community who expressed a strong desire to build their very own primary school.

Due to the Darfur crisis in the Southern regions of Sudan, 150,000 Massalit people have fled to refugee camps across the Chad border.   With a longstanding tradition of agrarian livelihoods, literacy rates amongst this ethnic minority are estimated at just 1-5%.

In the Tobasa region of Indonesia, educational biases and inequalities take many forms. Teachers arrive hours late; students with learning difficulties are harshly treated; poor families cannot afford adequate nutrition; religious favoritism weighs upon academic results; and children are denied access to education if they cannot afford the mandatory books and uniform.
