Capacity Building

Poverty and HIV/AIDs in Zambia is causing an epidemic of abandoned, neglected or orphaned children as family means are stretched beyond breaking point. Parents and extended relatives simply cannot afford to feed, clothe and educate the younger generation so many turn to orphanages as a last resort. Although these care facilities appear like a sanctuary to many vulnerable families, they often negatively impact childhood development, human rights and society as a whole. Studies have shown that children in institutions are less equipped for independence later in life and more susceptible to abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Instead of investing thousands to look after children in orphanages, the investments should be made to keep children out of them. To this end we provide capacity building projects in areas of governance, education, health, social support and income generation. Activities range from malaria awareness to handicraft training, goat-rearing to water pump maintenance.
