Nepal Earthquake Emergency Food Distributions

On April 25th 2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake thundered through the Central and Western districts of Nepal. A series of smaller aftershocks continued throughout the subsequent week leaving the country completely devastated with whole communities reduced to rubble and loss of life exceeding 9,000 people.

This emergency operation is assisting up to 1.4 million earthquake-affected victims by providing food rations and cash transfers as required throughout the initial three month relief phase. Particular assistance will target the most vulnerable population groups including internally displaced people who are not able to access food through their normal livelihood means. The two major objectives of this mission are to:

  • Meet urgent food and nutrition needs for disaster-effected communities
  • Prevent malnutrition amongst infants and pregnant/ lactating women

Key Areas of Expenditure:

  • Food distributions: high-energy biscuit rations provided to 1.4 million people in the first month.
  • Cash distributions: cash transfers provided where local markets and services are functioning throughout the second and third month.
  • Supplementary feeding program: Specialised nutritious food products distributed to children aged 6-59 months and pregnant/ lactating women.
