Sustainable Schooling

Uganda

Subsistence living is ubiquitous throughout rural Uganda. Without the capital to purchase land and scale up small enterprises, the majority of families remain fettered to their farms and single-room clay huts with little opportunity to send their children to school. Perpetuated by a failing education system in which textbooks are shared between 14.4 students nationwide and more than a quarter of classrooms do not have teachers, it is no shock that only a third of primary students progress through secondary school and much fewer successfully graduate from tertiary institutions.

This project has built up a struggling school to provide quality education at a cost that is cheaper than the public system. Auxiliary local enterprises in cattle rearing, chicken farming, vanilla bean harvesting and bee keeping are up and running to upskill locals in community-relevant vocations and keep the school sustainable.
